William Stacy Porter

Service: WWII and Korea

William Stacy Porter (1911 - 1975) of Connellsville was born in Dawson, Pennsylvania, the son of Donald S. and Jennie H. Glenn Porter. He was a 1929 Graduate of Connellsville High School. He married Mary C. Marshall on Christmas Eve 1942 just days before they both went to separate service assignments for the duration of WWII. After several state-side duty stations Bill was deployed to 

England and France. He eventually rose to the rank of Major during the Korean conflict.

He received the American Caampaign Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and the WWII Victory Medal. On occasion during the course of the war he was able to talk to and see his wife, who was also serving in England and France as a nurse with the 58th General Hospital.

One of Bills interesting wartime experiences was being sketched by Elizabeth Black, a Pittsburgh native. His sketch is one of more than 1,000 sketches she did as an American Red Cross volunteer overseas.
